Our Year 11 students recently stepped beyond the classroom and into the heart of Melbourne for the Towards Leadership Conference, a day of reflection, challenge and connection held at Melbourne Town Hall and across Melbourne’s CBD.

Centred on four powerful themes: leading yourself with courage, serving others with compassion, seeking truth and shaping the future with purpose. The conference invited students to think deeply about the kind of leaders they want to become and the values that will guide them.

Leadership starts with self

The day featured keynote presentations from Suren Chandrajit and Darcy Moore, who shared personal insights into navigating uncertainty, learning through challenge, building meaningful relationships and leading with values and purpose.

Their stories brought to life Trinity’s leadership model of Leading Self, Leading with Others and Leading Our Futures, encouraging students to consider that leadership is not simply about a position or title, but about the choices we make and the influence we have on those around us.

Students then explored these ideas through practical workshops. Jamal Elsheikh led a session focused on courage, while Daniel Olasoji challenged students to think about community and the role each of us can play in creating positive change.

Walking Melbourne’s history

The conference also provided an opportunity for students to engage with Melbourne’s history through a Truth Walk with guides from the Koori Heritage Trust.

Walking through the city, students explored Melbourne through the lens of history, truth and change, gaining a deeper understanding of the stories and perspectives that have shaped the place in which they live and learn.

Leadership across generations

Leadership was also brought to life through connections within the Trinity community. The current School Captaincy team, Senior School staff and representatives from the Old Trinity Grammarians (OTGs) shared their experiences and perspectives, connecting our Year 11 students with leaders across generations of the Trinity community.

Together, these experiences encouraged students to look beyond leadership as something they will take on in the future and instead consider how they can lead now, through courage, compassion, curiosity and purpose.

The Towards Leadership Conference was ultimately an invitation to reflect not only on what kind of leaders our students might become, but on how they can begin shaping the future today.
